Besins Healthcare UK has launched Prometrium (progesterone) 400mg soft vaginal capsules, claimed to be the UK’s first licensed treatment for the prevention of miscarriage in women with early pregnancy bleeding and a history of recurrent miscarriage.
Defined as the loss of three or more pregnancies, recurrent miscarriage affects around one in every 100 couples trying to conceive.
When the effects of progesterone therapy were evaluated by the PRISM trial (Coomarasamy A, et al. 2019), for women with three or more previous miscarriages, there was a 28 per cent relative reduction in the risk of miscarriage. Additionally, there was a 15 per cent increase in live birth rates in the progesterone group compared to the placebo group.
